All of the tribes listed below are isolated from civilisation. Some communities are hostile and violent to
people who do not belong to their group. There have been violent encounters with other
indigenous communities, as well as with lumberjacks and hunters, some
of whom have been killed. Often
my life was in danger when I set about trying to win their confidence
in order to be accepted into their group. All of these tribes differ in language, physical characteristics
and social structure, even though they often live mere kilometres from
each other. The following study is a census of the number of people
who make up each tribe, the geographical area in which they live, and
the plants and bark that are most commonly used to treat the various illnesses. As of the 40’s, numerous groups or parts of groups,
which presently form part of the known Amazonian
ethnic groups, have remained completely or almost completely isolated. The phenomenon is due to their desire, during
the past 200 years, to be autonomous, a result of the brutal penetration
into the region by the European invaders. It is essential not to consider these ethnic groups, void of contact with the outside world, as humans who are ignorant of the exterior world, but rather as groups that wish to keep, for as long as possible, a safe distance between themselves and the exterior world. These groups are the symbolic guardians of the most virgin and savage areas of the rain forests.
* Note: the names of the herbs are the ones that are
most commonly used for these plants. This is due to the fact that each
tribe knows them under a different name.
These names will not be mentioned in this study, given the diversity
and pronunciation. ** Data from the Census: February, 1999 Control Sanitario de Publicidad 04710108738 Reg Salubridad SSA 03311402195 Reg Salubridad SSA 03311301363 Manifestado ante la S.S.A. de acuerdo a los articulos de la ley general vigente
